December 26 sees the launch of they're real! tinted primer from Benefit Cosmetics. The primer is available in mink-brown and tints, and defines and primes lashes. Worn alone it gives lashes a feathery, natural look, and worn as a primer it enhances they're real! mascara's performance, dramatically boosting length and separation. Once you have decided to enter this wonderful industry the next step is to decide whether to go it alone or find an agency. The decision depends both on the ambitions of your child and the type of work they will be trying to get.

Is an agent really necessary?

Modelling

Modelling jobs for children are almost exclusively to be found through agents. Advertising agencies and casting directors are too busy to advertise and hold open castings for every single job. They will either look first at the agency web site or they will go straight to an agent with a description of the type of children they need.

From that description, the agencies will look through their models and draw up a list of children who fit the requirements. The casting director or photographer will then liaise with the agency to arrange times and locations for castings. It would be virtually impossible to find modelling work without having an agent.

Acting

Stage schools, local drama groups and youth theatres might provide useful contacts in the business. It is possible that an unknown child will spot an advertisement in The Stage, and will go along to an open audition and land a major role, but agents are invariably the first to find out about such auditions and will ensure that their clients get to meet the producer or director.

Agents will also be the first stop for production companies who are hiring people for extra work in films and television. An agent will be told the number of children that the production company are looking for. If the agent is trusted and has a good relationship with the production company the children will be sent along to work on the day without an audition being required. This is called a direct booking.

What are the basic must have traits for any mainstream model?

It all sounds pretty shallow because it is. In the end models are clothes hangers and their role in the fashion industry is to make clothes look good so that they will sell. It is an industry heavily influenced by physical appearances. To recap, making it as a model requires the following traits and skills:

• A slim build
• A height somewhere between 5'8" and 5'11" (there are exceptions)
• Good bone structure with a symmetrical and angular face
• Being naturally photogenic and/or a good knowledge of ones “angles”
• Good posture and a strong runway walk (learned or natural)

Do you have what it takes to be a model? So you want to be a model? Do you have what it takes? Many pretty-in-person girls make terrible models and sometimes the plain Jane's just take your breath away on film. It takes much more than just a pretty face and a slim figure to make it as a mainstream model. You need to have the total package, a mix of genetics and personality, in order to thrive in the modelling industry. So what traits does a successful model need to have? Some of the qualities of a mainstream model are obvious but the others may surprise you.

When agents look for in new models to sign, as they look for a very specific set of physical criteria.

How you look is definitely the first thing agents see. First and foremost models say over 13 years need to be tall and slim; for the most part they need to be slimmer than the average girl. This is the reason that the modelling industry gets such a bad reputation, because the call for slim models could be seen as promoting an unrealistic body image. While this is a valid criticism there are some equally valid reasons that models need to be slender. Clothes hang better on a smaller body and the fashion industry is essentially about selling clothes and other trappings of style like cosmetics, skin care, accessories, and perfumes. This is mainly what the clients what, therefore model agencies much match their clients assignments.

The fashion industry’s love-affair with skinny girls is not part of a conspiracy against average sized bodies. Slimmer figures are important on the runway but they also photograph better. Why? Pictures are two dimensional and for this reason the body loses some of its angles in photographs. Without the proper angles even slender girls can appear heavy in pictures. Lighting plays an important role in counteracting the flattening effects of photography but it can’t correct for all the effects of transferring a three dimensional object on to a two dimensional piece of paper. Using a slim model also helps eliminate the problems associated with losing the all important angles.
